Geoff's 'Land of the Dead' Review

I haven't quite figured out how to make it obvious when I'm posting someone else's thoughts. Sorry if that's confusing, but to clarify this is Geoff's review of the new Land of the Dead movie.

Land of the Dead disappoints. The characters and motivations aren't interesting or believable. This time around, Romero seems to have focused on making a social statement first and a movie second.

Land of the Dead lacks any real antagonists. In the previous films, sympathetic heroes were trapped in the apocalypse with villains who epitomized hubris, gluttony, greed, and cowardice. In Land of the Dead, Dennis Hopper's Rich Conservative Political Leader exists more as the target of satire than a threat to be reckoned with.

Even the walking dead fail to frighten. They were once an omni-oppressive force hell-bent on killing and eating anyone they could find at any cost. Now they are distracted by pretty fireworks, and co-operate with one another inexplicably, almost to the point of holding hands.

Though Land of the Dead is sufficiently gruesome (R), fans are hoping for a new cut on DVD with as much gore as its predecessors (Unrated). Hopefully some story and character development will be edited in as well"
