Made It!
Thanks to help from John, Lisa, Anthony and a few others, we managed to get the house emptied in time to get the baby, dog, cat, crates for each, stroller, car seat, pack'n'play, three suitcases, diaper bag, backpack and ourselves on a red-eye to Newark. There were a few hick-ups in the day and it was easily one of the most grueling we've ever had, but we made it and are recuperating now at my sister's while our stuff is in transit.
Thanks to everyone who found time to see us off, and especially to Julie, Mark and John for helping us finish packing on time. The rest of you Californians will have to come visit to make up for the lost time!

First Flu!
Just when we thought we could use a little something extra in the challenging department, flu season came along. Sophie woke up from a nice long nap this afternoon only to get sick all over her crib. This after four days of diarrhea - poor kiddo! We'll spare you the pictures of the crib wreckage.
Everyone in the household has been making doctor visits. Eula had to get a lump on her side checked out, Eliot had a pre-flight checkup and was advised to go on a diet (surprise), and Sophie had to go back in to see the pediatrician today: ironically, she got her flu shot this morning. At least the upset stomach explains why she's been so fussy the past few days!

Tahoe Trip
Saturday morning we got ready early and drove up to Lake Tahoe for a last visit before we leave for New York. We had a very relaxing time staying with Jesse, and really enjoyed seeing the Sierras in fall. All the aspens and maples were changing, the days were sunny and warm and the nights below freezing.
Sunday morning we drove down to Genoa, NV, to have breakfast in a great little bakery, then walked around the town a bit. Afterwards Eula, Jesse & I swam in the lake, which was chilly but really fun. Brandie's nausea and tiredness unfortunately hasn't gone away yet, and the long drives on winding roads didn't help much. We decided to take it easy and just absorb the views from Jesse's house: thanks to him and Carison for letting us stay!

Holy Smokes Part II
That's right, part two! That isn't some old picture of Sophie we dredged up: we're expecting again!
The ultrasound was this morning, it placed the due date at May 3rd, 2006. So Brandie is 10 weeks, 1 day along - she's almost finished with the first trimester! So far so good, although Brandie's been much more tired and prone to nausea this time around.
For archiving sake, I thought it would be fun to use the 'Comments' field to place your gender prediction. Ranch Relocation
Brandie mentioned this briefly in the 'Tooth' post, but we are in fact moving from the Bay Area - at least for a little while. Our first house is currently in escrow, and due to close at the end of this month. Sometime before then we'll move all of our stuff across the country to the mid-Hudson Valley region of upstate New York.
We've talked about moving for over a year, and considered a host of places to move to (Vancouver, Boise, Tahoe, Austin, Baltimore, Charlotte, etc.) We're fortunate to have so many good friends and family in all those places who've petitioned us to move to their hometowns! We wish we could try them all out, maybe someday we will.
The primary motivation for us to make the change was our amazing daughter, who's had to spend more time in daycare and with sitters (as loving and wonderful as they are) than we'd like over the past six months. Going forward we'd like her to be in daycare at most part-time, and to spend more time with us.
We're really happy that while we had to work so much, the daycare provided such excellent care and attention for Sophie. All the staff love her and hate to see us go, we'll all miss them very much!
Brandie & I are also both ready to take a break from our current careers and try some other things. I've been at it nearly ten years, and Brandie over four. The changes are scary, but exciting at the same time.
There's still lots to sort out, we haven't locked in on a rental or even a specific town yet, but we've toured the area, contacted some prospective employers and setup interviews for after we've relocated. Please keep us in your thoughts, and let us in if we show up on your doorstep!

First Tooth!
Sophie cut her first tooth yesterday! And by the feel of it, her second tooth isn't far behind. The ladies at the daycare were saying that she did it for them as they kept saying she had to cut teeth for them before she left for NY.
This might explain the ear infection, diarrhea and not sleeping the night before.

Sophie: 10 Months
What was that? Did that title say 10 months? How did that happen?
Sophie is completely coming out of her shell. Her last doctors appointment had her weighing in at 21 lbs and 4 oz and she was 27 inches long. She has been doing so much fun stuff lately. While on our trip to NY she figured out how to flirt. She scrunches her face up and smiles in order to get people to smile back at her. She is especially fond of doing this when we tell her "no, no" as she is grabbing the lamp cord.
I realize it is our fault but she discovered that if she laughs as we are saying "no, no" that it makes us laugh. It's very hard to act serious when this little one is laughing at you.
She is eating pretty much everything now. Of course she won't eat green beans or broccoli but she will inhale cheese and grapes (a true California girl).
She has started interacting with the pets more. Eliot is the most patient (or slowest) so he gets most of the attention. She will pat him and even lay her head on his belly. Eula on the other had just runs from Sophie so they end up in this fun (for Sophie) game of chase.
She absolutely says "dada" when she sees Jake and was even saying it to a picture of Jake while at daycare the other day. No luck for mama. She seems to have forgotten how to say that. She has kind of started calling me "bada". I wonder if she hears Jake call me Brandie and is going to start calling me Brandie. Who knows.
She loves racing for the fridge everytime you open it and has figured out how to open the cabinets. We were hoping to avoid putting all the childproofing things on before we moved so we have now taped all of the cabinets closed. Not so convenient for us but we manage.
She gets to watch the Wiggles on a fairly regular basis and stands at the TV and dances and touches the screen as they sing and dance.

Ear Infection IV: The Revenge
That's right, today Sophie was diagnosed with her fourth ear infection. The pediatrician described her right ear as "cherry red". It hasn't slowed her down too much, but she hasn't been sleeping very well.
Yesterday she stood up using the laundry basket, and started pushing it down the hall. With a little stabilizing help she made five or six trips up and down the hallway between her room and the loft. We stopped to put her toys in and out of the basket, which she did quite a few times.
She also loves putting anything she can find through Eliot's door into the garage. To date, several plastic Jello containers, a wooden spoon, Eula's Holy Roller toy and (currently) an oversized pearl necklace of Brandie's have all made the journey through. Afterwards she pushes the door fully open and peers through to check her results.
I hope that necklace isn't real. We'll get back to you on that.
