Air Show

We decided to kick off the Fourth of July week by attending the annual Broome County Air Show at the airport. We were both amused by the idea of voluntarily going back to an airport after being stuck at so many recently, but that got less funny as we got stuck for an hour in traffic waiting to get to the shuttle bus parking lot. We had left the house late, around 6pm, and only had a few pretzels to pass around so the girls were pretty hungry when we were still a ways away from the airport.

Once we arrived however there was lots to see and do, and the girls pretty much forgot about being hungry. There were loads of cool helicopters and airplanes, and some very impressive aerial stunts being performed above. Next year we'll remember to bring our own earplugs (thanks to David & Karen for lending us some!), and by then Josie should be old enough not to pull them out right away. Sophie went on one of those inflatable jumpy tents twice and cried both times her turn was over, while Josie & I shared a watermelon sherbet with sprinkles from Pat Mitchell's. We headed out before the fireworks as it was chillier than we had anticipated, and beat it home to get ready for our Adirondacks trip.

Sophie Update

Sophie's culture from last week came back positive for MRSA again, so we're headed to the University of Syracuse Hospital on Thursday to see a pediatric infectious disease specialist. Hopefully they can give us some answers and help her kick this thing for good!

She's on another round of antibiotics in the meantime; since the regular ones don't work and she's developed an allergy to the sulfa one, they've prescribed one that's pretty nasty and apparently the last resort before they have to admit her and use IV treatment. On the bright side all but one of her stitches came out today, and the incision is healing well.

Red Dress Run

Wednesday night we went out to cheer our friend David at the local Red Dress Run. It was very fun, and right down the road in Endwell so afterwards David & Karen came by for some (you guessed it!) Joey's. Sorry Karen.

I expected to have nostalgic feelings about cross country races, but instead seeing David run forcibly reminded me of so many winter days running out in the cold before wrestling practices. David was missing about 10 layers of sweatshirts and plastics, but his running posture (and my memory of those grueling practices) is still as strong as ever!

Congrats on running the race Dave, and thanks for inviting us!

Roll Up A Newspaper

A few years ago, while on a visit from California we visited with my cousin Joanne. She had just gotten a new chocolate lab puppy named Ginger, who was eating all of her family's new shoes (not the old ones, for some reason). She told us of the advice the local veterinarian had given her:

"You take a newspaper, and roll it up tight," she started, and Brandie & I probably both visibly winced. We lived in Marin County at the time, notorious for its animal-loving ways: legislation was being proposed there so that you couldn't call yourself a pet "owner", instead you were its guardian. We weren't quite that extreme, but had grown up in more practical areas where people just didn't spend $4,000 on surgery for their pets and thought we knew what Joanne was going to say next.

"..and whack yourself in the head for leaving the shoes out," Joanne finished, and we both burst out laughing. Good advice, and ironically one of the most consistently recurring feelings with parenting I've had: it seems there's always something out or in the way that the girls are getting into (often they've put it there themselves to trip over), and you can't blame them. It's fun! It's exciting! It's dangerous! Wheee!!!

Miss Josephine finds it all especially thrilling, and will chortle gleefully as she gets into the most dangerous stuff. Hopefully Sunday deliveries will be enough.

Happy Fathers Day

It's exhausting but being a father is supposedly one of the most rewarding things there is. I don't know, what do you think Dad?

Happy Fathers Day to all of you special men; Denny, George, Dan, Joe, new Dads Kelly and Ben and most of all, my wonderful husband Jacob. I hope you all get to relax today.

Congratulations Kelly and Jennifer

Chris & Joanna Reception

This weekend we traveled to Myrtle Beach, SC, to attend a reception for our friends Chris & Joanna. The party was hosted by Chris's mom & step-dad at their beautiful house outside Myrtle Beach, and catered with some fantastic barbecue.

We had a great time, despite some serious travel delays (a total of 18 hours at various airports over a four-day period, ugh) and our thanks go out to everyone involved: David & Karen for letting us stay at their condo, Dad & Sue for watching Eula, Janet & Carl for hosting, Trina for making a great cake and Chris & Joanna for getting married!

Congratulations Ben and Kelly

Our friends Ben and Kelly decided to be the only people to actually deliver their baby on the due date. Paige was born on June 8th and is happy and healthy.

Congratulations Ben and Kelly and weclome little Paige. We can't wait to see you in August!
